just for a day

Photobucket

The day lilies lined the roadsides all the way down to Gettysburg where we spent a few days over the holiday. They were also waiting for me in the garden when we returned home.

Photobucket

A hot spell, humid and still, has been replaced by breezy fresh air today. The day lily blooms with the bold oranges and reds, that catch my eye and hold it. I studied them.

Photobucket

At dawn, a bloom opens to catch the sun, captures it for a day...by nightfall the blossom withers.

As much as I am tempted to pick and eat them in soup or salads, the fleeting beauty convinces me to let the bloom stay on the stem.

My lilies haven't bloomed for a couple years. Just shows you what a drought can do.

Lilies are good to eat? Who knew? I keep learning about all this food that was never in the BHG red and white cookbook my mom used exclusively when I was a kid.

Love the red ones! My lillies are also taller this year....most of my flower stalks are 4.5-5 feet tall!

Beautiful!! I remember thinning and transplanting lilies at the house I grew up in in NY. We had some of the beautiful orange ones. Thanks for sharing!!

I did a lot of that...trying to make spreading plants fill in...had a whole patch of mint I'd planted underneath the pool deck (where no one wanted to mow grass anyhow!).

I love the picture from underneath the lily! The last time I tried a shot like that, we were hiking in the Smokies and I fell over. :o)

It is the hour of the daylily. Amazing how they withstand the heat and humidity and look outstanding. I love that last photo. It looks like a delicious drink.

Hemerocallis is the daylily family that is edible...I've been eating them since I was a kid and my mother used to serve them up in salad.

You may also eat the yello "stella"
...they are good cooked up dipped in egg batter...or throw them in a stir fry (pick them in the bud form)

As with any other new food, please remember that certain people may have food allergies..and you should only consume a small amount with caution at first..you don't want to get sick!
