who are you?

Photobucket

The moisture in the woods has called the toadstools up.

Some have been nibbled.

I came upon this caterpiller, near the river.

At least he wasn't sitting on a toadstool!

....but he did inspire me to pick up my old and tattered copy of Alice's Adventures...

Photobucket

one of my favorite books to read and reread...

Caterpillar: Who are YOU?

Alice: This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation. I -- I hardly know, sir, just at present -- at least I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.

advice from a caterpiller or chapter 5

....(YOU ARE OLD FATHER WILLIAM)

...takes on new meaning for me these days....

  2. I'd never seen one of those before, so I did some hunting. That's an elm sawfly larva, and not truly a caterpillar. The adults look a bit like enormous bees.

  3. What fun associations!! You must have grown up in Pa. (as I did) to know the "You Are Old Father William" song. I don't know anyone else who knows it.....or can make sense of it. But I love it.

  7. Alice in Wonderland is one of my favorites too Cyndy. As a matter of fact we had a AIW croquet party a few years ago and everyone dressed a part. It was a blast.

What a wonderful mushroom. WOW and big. The larva is cool too.

  8. Lovely larva and toadstool. I happened upon a very cool insect yesterday- a phantom crane fly. Managed to catch and photograph it!

I have dragonflies but they are too fast to photograph.

  13. Gosh, it's been eons since I read Alice. Your caterpillar looks perfect for the part though.
